Building Divisions Roles and Responsibilities
The Building Division is responsible for the enforcement of the International Building Code, the Uniform Plumbing Code, and the International Mechanical Code as adopted by the State of Washington and Kitsap County, as well as the Washington State Energy Code and the Washington State Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality Code. The Building Division performs plan reviews to assure that proposed construction will comply with the adopted codes and ordinances, issues permits, and performs inspections of construction projects. The Building Division is also responsible for assigning addresses to all improved properties in unincorporated Kitsap County and for the investigation of dangerous buildings and code violation problems.
Washington State and Kitsap County have adopted the International Codes in order to protect the life, health and property of its citizens. The Building Division administers these codes and assists the community, design professionals, and other agencies by providing building related information and technical support, as well as by promoting education regarding local building code requirements. As the building industry and construction methods are rapidly changing, the Building Division must consistently review current construction methods, materials, and code developments to be prepared to provide the service that the public deserves. From new construction to the repair or alteration of existing buildings, the Building Division plays an invaluable role in the safety of a community.
