Pet licensing now handled by Kitsap County
(Port Orchard, WA)
- Officials from both Kitsap County and the Humane Society are working
together to transfer pet licensing responsibilities to the County.
Working together allows both agencies to develop licensing strategies
that takes advantage of the skills each provide. “By reducing licensing
activities at the Humane Society our employees and volunteers are able
to direct more time to the essential animal control tasks which
strengthens our animal control program,” according to Sean Compton, the
Executive Director at the Kitsap Human Society.
“We collect approximately $100,000 annually in pet licensing, which we
use to offset the costs of animal control in Kitsap County,” said Nancy
Buonanno-Grennan, Kitsap County Administrator. “In total, the County
spends about $535,000 per year on Animal Control Services. As the County
has cut the budgets of every office and department, Animal Control also
faced cuts. Through this transfer, the Humane Society gets to focus on
its core mission and the County’s Auditor’s Office – responsible for
licensing County-wide – will eventually take on the animal licensing
component to build on that office’s core competencies. In this, both
agencies are using scarce resources more efficiently.
Animal control includes animal rescue and enforcement, cruelty cases,
complaints about pets, dangerous dogs, and helping with lost and injured
pets. The Human Society uses volunteers and fund raisers to help support
animal control activities.
