Clear Creek Floodplain Restoration
The natural floodplain of Clear Creek has been severely constrained
by retail/commercial development, roads, and road crossing culverts.
Historically, agricultural activities also impacted the stream-riparian
corridor and degraded the floodplain function through ditching of
tributary streams and channelization of the creek itself.
The area around the confluence of the East and West Forks of the creek
has been
especially manipulated.

Project Description
The objective of this proposed
project is to restore natural floodplain function and reduce the impact
of stream flooding on downstream segments of the creek in the Silverdale
corridor. The project must be designed such that flooding impacts are
reduced on Silverdale Way and in the stream segment downstream of NW
Waaga Way. This floodplain project, along with the replacement of the
Bucklin Hill Road culverts at the estuary of the creek, should provide a
more natural response to high-flow events.
The proposed project would accomplish the
following:
-
Remove undersized culverts on the East and West
Forks of Clear Creek.
-
Remove the existing road fill and pavement of
Schold Road.
-
Restore floodplain and stream-riparian habitat in
the Schold and Markwick reaches.
-
Restore off-channel wetland areas at the
confluence of the East and West Forks.
-
Construct trails and
footbridges along the restored portion of the creek to provide
linkages to current biking and walking trails of the Clear Creek
Trail network.
